And so, a new production is among us....

NEW KENT STAGEHANDS

READING AUDITION – FALL 2009

Here I am, standing in the middle of paradise!! I can hardly believe my luck—who would have thought that little ol’ me could really be standing here in the middle of this place at this time? Is it a stroke of luck—have I been living a good, honest life and this is my reward? You decide after I tell you my story.

Like any good story, it began years ago, when I was a child. My mom would say, “work hard and all of your dreams will come true.” Of course my dad would retort—“good things only happen to those who are honest and God-fearing.” I tried to take both into account. I worked hard, led what I believed was an honest life and went to church almost every Sunday.

I graduated from high school and then went onto college. I usually went to class, except for those eight o’clock classes—nobody was ever there for those. For four years, I pondered what I was going to do with the rest of my life. Graduation came—all my friends received their degrees. Dad reminded me—“I gave you four years and no more!!!” I scoured the want ads—real estate, urban planning, teaching, mechanical analyist. There were so many choices!!! Resumes flew out of my computer via the internet to dozens of employers. Finally, one offered me a job!

So here I am, in Fairbanks, Alaska, selling sno-cones to tourists during the summer and hunting and fishing all winter long!! A paradise for someone like me—who could ask for anything more!

Auditions September 29th!!

NEW KENT STAGEHANDS READING AUDITION
SEPTEMBER 29TH
NKMS AUDITORIUM: 7:00 PM

We woke up that Saturday morning and said, "Let's go somewhere. We haven't been anywhere all summer." Great idea, right? As we were eating breakfast we discussed our possibilities.
"Let's go to the beach—our summer won't be complete until we go and dip our toes in the salt water, " I said, knowing full well that my beach-deprived life would have no effect on my spouse.
Before he even said it, I could hear, "Are you kidding, getting on the interstate on a Saturday and heading east—all that traffic! Are you nuts?? I'd sooner put salt in the pool out back before I would drive to the beach on Saturday. You'll have to think of something else!!"
"All right, then, let's go to the mountains. We can go to one of those places where you can pick your own peaches—you love peaches!! And when we come home, I'll make peach cobbler!! You can't say no to peach cobbler!"
I could tell by the look in his eyes that somehow the answer would not be positive. "Picking peaches on my day off! What are you thinking? First, that sounds like work. Second, all that peach fuzz! I couldn't reach a shower fast enough to be rid of the stuff! Keep thinking—the mountains and peach picking are not on my agenda today."
Knowing that east and west were out of the question, I only had two directions left to go. Which should I try first? North. "I have the perfect place. Let's ride up to D.C. and walk around the mall. It's a great day to soak up some history and patriotic fervor. What do you say?"
"Do you know how crowded it will be in D.C.? It's the summer -- tourists all over the place! Why, we couldn't walk from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial without tripping over some little kid or stepping in some dog's…"
I stopped him before he could get any farther. I realized that D.C. was out of the question. That only left south as a viable option. And as hard as I tried, I couldn't think of a prospect to the south to my liking. I cleaned up the breakfast dishes. Then it dawned on me, the perfect spot---I rushed into the living room to tell him. There he was, sound asleep on the sofa, doing what he enjoyed on a Saturday—napping. The perfect end to a perfect summer Saturday—before it had really begun.

**The first practice begins on October 6th at NKMS Auditorium at 7:00 pm. **
**The play selected will be determined by the number auditioning.**
